The Boston Change Process Study Group

On Moving Through and Being Moved By

Recorded Saturday 11 September 2021

With Nadia Bruschweiler-Stern M.D., Heather Churchill PsyD, Karlen Lyons-Ruth Ph.D, Alexander Morgan M.D. and Bruce Reis Ph.D.

CE Credits: 4 hours

In this webinar, our speakers will explore this process of mutuality as a developmental process of moving through and being moved by another’s experience of the self and the world.

While psychoanalytic thinking has moved far beyond the neutral analyst and now fully encompasses the mutual influence between patient and therapist, the nature of those two-person influences has only begun to be articulated.

Bruce Reis
Embodiment in Development and in the Therapeutic Relationship

Therapeutic process is not merely about resolving conflicts or symbolizing mental content but is more centrally about catalysing new capacities for relationship. Change occurs in moving through others and their moving through us. We are always consciously and non-consciously moving through each other’s experiences of self and world in embodied ways involving action, affect and intention. This embodied dance with special partners, who have become highly charged others for us, occurs largely outside of consciousness. The embodied moving through process in psychotherapy drives the long developmental trajectory involved in coming to know one’s own and others’ minds. In this process, capacities develop that will lead to greater and greater relational abilities to engage.

Heather Churchill
Case Presentation & Illustration

This case presentation will illustrate the processes of how one may be moved by and moving through another. It will provide an account of a 4-times weekly psychotherapy with Sam, a 25-year-old man who was a patient at a long-term inpatient facility for about 16 months. He sought admission after several near-lethal suicide attempts and reported feeling depressed and suicidal since early adolescence.

We will hear an overview of Sam’s history, outlining his development during the therapy, and explore process material from several sessions to illustrate this.

Panel Discussion with Q&A
With Nadia Bruschweiler-Stern, Heather Churchill, Karlen Lyons-Ruth, Alexander Morgan and Bruce Reis, chaired by Karlen Lyons-Ruth
The focus of the panel discussion will integrate the conceptual approach of the paper presentation with the clinical presentation and will involve the audience in a discussion of how concepts of moving through the other and being moved by the other take shape in the clinical encounter.

Final Reflections with Q&A
With Nadia Bruschweiler-Stern, Heather Churchill, Karlen Lyons-Ruth, Alexander Morgan and Bruce Reis

A discussion on the integration and expansion of some of the central themes of the conference, inviting comments from the audience on the morning’s presentations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By attending this workshop virtually, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the parallels between children’s early developmental trajectory and the embodied psychoanalytic process.
  • Develop the argument that being moved by another or moving through another is central to the process of therapeutic change.
  • Describe aspects of the process of ‘moving through and being moved by’.
